How to Slay Your Goals and Make 2019 Your Year

New Year – New Goals

This time of year brings up a lot of talk about setting goals, planning for the new year and new years resolutions. Most are lucky if those resolutions last until the end of January. That whole “new year, new me” concept can get off track pretty quickly if you don’t stay focused on what you want to accomplish or change.

January 1st really is just another day – until you make something of it. It definitely provides us with a “fresh start” feeling. That feeling like you can do whatever you set your mind to – and you can! So how do you keep that fresh New Year’s feeling going all year long and stay focused on your goals? Here’s 6 tips to help you stay focused and on track to rock this new year.

HOW TO STAY FOCUSED ON YOUR GOALS

START OUT SMALL – This is probably one of the most important things about making resolutions or goals for yourself. There is nothing more intimidating than some large, far off goal. Starting off small can help you lead yourself toward the bigger goals you want to accomplish. For example, if I stated that “I want to save $5,000 in 2019”, that’s a big goal and can easily make you feel overwhelmed. If you broke that goal down into smaller chunks, you can make it more manageable and more attainable. So you can say something like “I will save $200 every paycheck” – this will be easier to accomplish each month and crossing each month off your list will motivate you to continue with your goals. The smaller steps in the plan help you maintain your focus and keep you on track towards your goal.

DON’T STRESS OUT – If you didn’t reach your goal at the end of the month – give yourself a break. Don’t stress about it. Enjoy your life and live in the moment. Analyze what happened and the progress you made and celebrate that progress. When you have the energy, refocus it on that goal and tweak something to make the goal more attainable. They key is to keep trying if it is still something that you want and if it is making you happy.

FOCUS ON YOUR REASON – Why did you set the goal to begin with? Were you saving up for a Disney vacation? Are you trying to lose weight to be healthier? Don’t forget about it then! Create a vision board which will help actively motivate you to achieving those goals. Put up pictures of Disney world near a jar and fill up the jar with excess change. Cut out pictures of motivational quotes and paste them in your planner or notebook. Whatever you feel will motivate you – put it out there so you can see it and stay focused on it.

PLAN IT OUT/WRITE IT DOWN – We should know by now that I am all about planners. It’s my secret weapon for staying organized. Not everyone is into planning, so even if you use a simple notebook to keep track of your goals, your “why”, your progress –  you can use it as a reference. Plus, the more you are forced to look at it – the more you will want to accomplish it. There is something to be said about the satisfaction one gets when you can check off goals and to-dos.

ANALYZE AND REVIEW YOUR PROGRESS REGULARLY – Do monthly check-ins with yourself regarding your progress that you’ve made toward your goals. Ask yourself questions like what’s working? what isn’t working? What changes do you need to make? Is there anything you can do to make your goal more achievable?

PRACTICE SELF-CARE – There is no way that you will be motivated and focused and stay that way if you dont take care of yourself. Self care helps you stay refreshed and energized and ready to conquer all the things that you have set out to do. Scheduling regular self-care or even setting a goal about it is a great way to make sure that you do it.

Accomplishing goals is never an easy task, especially when it comes to those really ambitious goals we tend to set for ourselves at the start of a new year. However, with a little faith, trust, and maybe even some pixie dust anything is possible. You got this! Let me know what your goals are for 2019! Happy New Year everyone!

  1. Happy New Year and thanks very much for these great tips. My only goals for 2019 is to be happy, spread happiness and be the change I want to see. So I started to collect rubbish on my walk with the dog. I do it every morning and figured even if I only pick up one piece every day the area will look a lot better soon and less plastic ends up in the sea (we live about 10 minutes from the North Norfolk coast). Wishing you and your family a wonderful 2019!

    1. Love your goals! I love that you are being the change you want to see everyday. Every little bit helps!!
Thanks for stopping by! Happy New Year!!
