Day in The Life of a Working Mom: Back to School Edition

DITL for Thursday, September 6th.

5:30am: Alarm rings, hit snooze

5:37am: Peel myself out of bed, check the weather, head to the bathroom to take a shower

5:49am: Get dressed, do hair (which because of the heat/humidity and potential rain – it’s gonna be curly [which consists of combing it, scrunching it, applying gel and that’s it).

6:05am: Applying makeup in the heat, only to sweat it off later.

6:10am: Get already pre-packed lunched completely packed and ready to go.

6:15am: Set out necessities for dinner.

6:17am: Take our dog, Bailey, for a walk.

6:27am: Give Bailey and Tiger, our cat, breakfast.

6:30am: My youngest daughter, Kylie, is up – get her dressed, do her hair.

6:45am: My oldest, Mackenzie, is up – she gets herself dressed and comes into the bathroom for me to do her hair. Today she requested a pony tail so no elaborate time-sucking hairstyle. Partly grateful, partly sad because I love doing her hair.

7:00am: The girls and I head downstairs for breakfast. They requested pancakes – I take frozen pancakes and put in the microwave for 35 seconds. I cut up some strawberries to go with it. They munch and chat about their dreams they had last night.

7:10am: Upstairs for teeth brushing and reapplication of some makeup since I truly did sweat some off (it’s hot.).

7:15am: Girls watch 15 minutes of a show while I clean some dishes and pack my work bag.

7:30am: We are out the door to school. I drop off Mackenzie first (they go to the same school but enter in different doors) and then head to drop off Kylie. We wait for about 5 minutes and finally the teachers assistant comes to open the door. Kisses and she’s on her way.

7:45am: I am home and take the dog out for a final walk before work.

8:00am: I grab my bag and head out the door to work.

8:05am: Yes, that quickly – I live super close by (a blessing and a curse). First thing on the list – check voicemails, emails, call a parent back. Chat with a co-worker. Head to the printer to gather some paperwork I need to do for someone.

9:00am: Grab my first client. Hour session.

10:00-12:00pm: Back to back clients Two half hour sessions (10 and 1030 and an hour session at 11), head to supervision with my co-workers and supervisor at 12pm with lunch in hand (Turkey and American cheese on white bread with spicy mustard).

12:00pm: In supervision – eat my turkey sandwich while we all discuss cases, pertinent topics and concerns.

1:00pm: Next client is here – back to back hour sessions until 4:00pm.

3:00pm Have a headache, so I grab M&Ms from the vending machine before my 3:00pm client. Eat a few and back to business – leave the rest in my desk drawer for emergencies (or tomorrow).

4:00pm: My 4pm cancelled and I had my secretary cancel out my evening clients because of my headache. Complete some notes and call another parent back.

4:30pm: Head home, in the pouring rain.

4:35pm: Soccer practice was cancelled – chat with the family – begin dinner prep – tonight is pork tenderloin. Preheat oven, peel potatoes. Put dinner in oven.

5:55pm: Serve dinner and relax and eat with my family.

6:25pm: Wash dishes, finish helping my oldest with her homework.

6:55pm-7:15pm: Help my oldest study for 2 tests that she has tomorrow.

7:20pm: Bath time for the girls.

7:30pm: My hubby helps with bath time and I go for a nice walk with our dog Bailey.

7:55pm: Brush out their hair, PJS on, story time – this time Daddy reads Skippy Jon Jones Cirque de Ole. After the story, the girls go to bed.

8:15pm: My husband starts to get ready for work. We chat quickly about the weekend plans and I help him choose an outfit for work.

8:25pm: While the girls are in bed, I am catching up on a show and checking my social media and texting in a group chat with friends.

8:45pm: Hubby leaves for work. I do a quick tidy of the house (mostly dog toys because Bailey is worse than a toddler with having his toys all over every room) and head upstairs to wash my face and take out my contacts.

9:00pm: Feel inspired to write about my day – whip out the computer and begin typing.

This is just a Thursday in my every day life. It’s not always the same every Thursday – this is just what today looked like. I am pretty busy at work so it does not leave a lot of idle time. You may also be wondering why I didn’t vacuum or do some laundry or something else more productive. For one, I did laundry Tuesday and Wednesday this week and nothing needed to be washed. As far as vacuuming or any other major housework – it is typically left for a weekend. Most days of the week it is hectic and I am so emotionally and physically exhausted from my job that I don’t do that during the week. My husband helps with things around the house and on certain days he will cook, do laundry or clean. He does not have a routine he follows because I am the type of person that really likes to do things myself. He knows this but still tries to help. During the day he sleeps because he works all night until 5am so we are on opposite schedules at the moment.

10:05pm: I typically like to be in bed by 10:30pm – it won’t happen tonight because I am writing this post. But soon I will head upstairs to bed only to do everything all over again. The great part of this night is that tomorrow is Friday – and then the weekend! This weekend I get to see my nephew for his 3rd birthday party and I am excited.

But as I was saying – this is just a day in the life of today.

Hope you all have a fantastic weekend!

Xx

Morgan
